A Special Conversation of Truth, Reality and Acceptance

In the past year, I’ve really enjoyed podcasts. It started with the “Going Blind Sucks” podcast and has really expanded. Once I began to find, listen and relate to others sharing their stories of Retinitis Pigmentosa, blindness and other life challenges. The enjoyment increased as I discovered more and more shows that touched home, in a big way.

A few months ago, I stumbled upon “The See Through Podcast,” hosted and created by Lance Johnson. On his show, Lance has fantastic discussions with people involved in the blind community. From assistive technology creators, other advocates for the disability community, and also fantastic discussions on his own journey with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Lance’s demeanor and delivery are what caught me most and within a few weeks, I had listened to all of the episodes he has shared. Needless to say, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good listen.

The idea…

After listening to his show, I reached out to Lance and we started chatting and it clicked. What started as a brief correspondence blossomed into a friendship. On a Saturday, we were texting back and forth and a thought came about of doing a “couples” show. The idea seemed like a home run and with that idea, progression started.

The thought was that we would bring o ur wives together and foster a communication between us all. Natalie and Lance are early in their journey and while Lance struggles at times with his vision, he is fortunate to still have a good amount of sight remaining. His wife, Natalie, is one the journey with Lance, just as my wife, Angie, is on a journey with me.

Being a little further down the road of sight loss, Angie and I have had our fair share of struggles, challenges, adaptions and acceptance. Through all of these things, we have learned a lot and have lessons to share. With that said, Lance and I convinced, with some bribery, to take the leap and give this a try!
